Cleansing: Cleansing is a good way to clear crystals/stones of negative energy. Sometimes after using them for a while they don't feel as energetic as they used to, then it is time to cleanse and recharge them. Cleansing your stones vary from holding them under running tap water (avoid chlorine), sea water, mineral or spring water, and imagining Creators White Light washing away all accumulated energy. Other ways are to bury them in Mother Earth for at least twenty four hours, to ground and cleanse them. Some people burn sage and allow the smoke to engulf to cleanse away any accumulated energies. Many spiritualists also believe that if you place your stones openly during the full moon also cleanses and enhances the properties. Some will place their stones in the clearest view of the moon at least two days prior and after each full moon. There is no right or wrong way to do any of these things, just go with your gut feelings and you should be fine. I feel intuition should be used in this area, as each person has a unique and individualized relationship with his/her stones and crystals. Do what resonates with you and have fun. Please be sure you are always grounded and protected before you use crystals.
Here are a few methods that I have found online to help you cleanse and program your crystals to help you meditate and heal.
Sunlight Method: Place in sunlight for a day, in the summer it may only take a few hours. Sunshine is wonderful for many crystals, Rock Crystal Quartz especially love it. Do not put in hot, direct sunlight. Some crystals may fracture with sudden temperature changes or while under intense heat. Others will fade.
**Some stones that can be damaged in sunlight**
Amethyst: becomes paler
Apatite: pink variety fades
Aquamarine: becomes paler
Beryl: brown or orange types may change to pale pink
Celestite: fades in direct sunlight
Danubrite: Fades
Fluorite: green and purple types change color
Rose Quartz: becomes paler
Kunzite: becomes pale or loses color
Sapphire: should be cleansed in moonlight
Bury Method: Burying your crystals or stones in moist sand (or soil) is a great way to cleanse your stones. If you can safely place crystals outside for nature to cleanse that is perfect, though you'll need to be able to distinguish which stones cleanse best by moonlight and which stones cleanse best by solar. Burying gems gets them clean but be aware that the polish is often removed when this method is used.
Moonlight Method: The light of the moon will cleanse, without fading. Leave them out to soak up the energy and release any that is no longer needed.
Simply place in view of the moonlight for a night, full moon cleansing takes a few hours.
Water Method: Place stones under running water for 5 minutes (or in the rain for many hours). It is good to have a water filter on your tap to filter out chemicals, then you can run under the tap. Running crystals under tepid (NOT hot and NOT cold) water for a few minutes and visualizing the unneeded energy flowing down the drain. Use pure water or spring water if you feel the chemicals in your water system would be harmful to the crystal. Some crystals are very sensitive and soluble in water. It is best not to soak such crystals as Halite, Selenite, Malachite, and Turquoise.
Crystal Cluster Method: Place your crystal, stones and Jewelry on a cluster or a large crystal that has sat in the sunlight for a few hours.
The cluster should be dedicated to this purpose with a clear intent. Clean your cluster every month or two in rain or sunlight if possible.
Smudge Method: Using sage, sweet grass, frankincense, Dragon's Blood or other smudging herb, simply light the sage and allow it to smoke in your bowl or abalone shell. You can either pass each stone over the smoke or use a feather to "brush" the smoke over the stone. Visualizing the negative energies rising and disappearing with the smoke is helpful.
Visualizing Method: A simple visualization techniqueis good for clearing out crystals as well. Just sit the crystal down on a table, altar, desk, etc. and visualize all of the stored up energy you don't want to be there, filling a balloon and flying away, or visualizing a mist moving out of the crystal into the universe to be transmuted into positive, love energy.
Homeopathic Method: Some homeopathic solutions clean gemstones as well.
Sea salt Method: use 1 cup of sea salt to 2 cups natural spring water. Place stones in the salt, and let them soak for the better part of the day. Rinse very well otherwise a white salt residue may remain. If the day is sunny, let them dry in the sunshine for a few hours, or if you have lunar stones, lay in the moonlight on a windowsill through the night. BEWARE: polish may be removed using this method.
Programming: Intending and Programming your stones After you choose and clear your gemstone or crystal, it is a good idea to dedicate it or program it. The purpose of programming a crystal or gemstone is to focus its abilities on something you specifically need, thereby magnifying the stone's intent through your own. The purpose of dedicating the stone to a high level healing energy or Goddess (Creator/God) is to protect it from negative energy. A crystal or stone that is programmed and dedicated in these ways becomes much more powerful and useful as a tool. This is a very simple process. Hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and sense its energy. With the stone being newly cleared, the energy will feel stronger and even more appealing that before. As you sense this energy and appreciate it, ask quietly to be connected to the deva of the crystal or gemstone. Though not animate, stones are living things and the deva of the piece is the stone¹s life-force energy.
Once you feel you have sensed what you can from the energy, think of what you will be using the stone for. Think of these uses, then quietly ask the gemstone if it is willing to act in the way you wish. The crystals energy may increase with a yes or seem to disappear with a no. If the stone accepts your intent, state in your mind that it be so. Once a stone is programmed, it will hold its intent until you or someone else reprograms it. To prevent any negative energy from attaching itself to your crystal you may with to dedicate it. To do this, simply hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and state clearly in your mind: ³Only the most positive high-level energy may work through this healing tool². Focus on your intent for awhile, then end your sensing (meditation) with "SO BE IT". The stone is now dedicated. You may also choose to dedicate your gemstone or crystal to a specific healing energy, for example, to a Goddess of healing. There are many healing goddesses, including Isis, Yemaya, Diana, and White Buffalo Calf Woman. For stones programmed for protection, Hecate or Kali are strong protection Goddesses.
Simple dedication: Here is a simple and effective suggestion on how to program a crystal from The Complete Crystal Guidebook by Uma Silbey. She explains the programming of a crystal in relatively simple terms, saying, "...The process of consciously creating a vibration or set of vibrations in a crystal and storing them in the crystal for later and/or continuing effect is known as programming the crystal. A crystal can be programmed with thought, emotion, sound, color, touch, or any other influence by which you can normally change the vibration in a crystal."
1. Clear the crystal that is to be programmed.
2. Hold the crystal in your both of your hands while gazing into it.
3. Center yourself and clear your mind.Concentrate on that with which you intend to program the crystal.
4. As you retain your concentration, inhale and forcefully exhale through your mouth. It is as if you are blowing your intention into the crystal.
5. Continue this process until you feel satisfied that you have completely filled the crystal with your intention.
